Stephen Searle was a former UKIP county councillor and retired Royal Marine who was convicted of murdering his wife, Anne Searle, in December 2017. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years in jail. The murder occurred after Anne discovered that Stephen was having an extramarital affair with their son's partner and told their children about it. During the trial, it was revealed that the couple had been experiencing marital problems, and Stephen had a history of domestic abuse towards Anne. Prior to his conviction, Stephen had served as a UKIP councillor for Stowmarket South on Suffolk County Council from 2009 to 2013.
